Planting season is one of the busiest periods on any farm. Once the soil is ready and weather conditions line up, there is little time to deal with a tractor that will not start, a worn planter component, or a hydraulic leak. Even a small mechanical problem can lead to lost hours when every day in the field matters.

Preparing machinery before planting starts gives farmers time to find problems, replace worn parts, and complete repairs without the pressure of a tight planting window. Regular agricultural equipment care also helps improve planting performance and keeps machines ready for the long hours ahead.

A good preseason check should cover more than the engine. Tractors, planters, seed drills, tillage tools, fertilizer systems, and precision-agriculture technology all deserve attention before heading into the field.

Start With a Thorough Preseason Inspection

Begin with the tractor and work through each major system. Check the engine, oil level, coolant, belts, hoses, battery, brakes, steering, PTO, and hydraulic connections. Look for cracks, leaks, loose fasteners, worn parts, and signs of corrosion. If a filter or fluid is due for service, take care of it before fieldwork begins.

Tires should also be checked carefully. Inspect the tread, sidewalls, wheels, and valve stems for damage. Set tire pressure according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and consider the load the tractor will be carrying. Check Fluids, Filters, and Lubrication

Fluids and filters are basic parts of farm maintenance, but they can easily be overlooked after a machine has spent months in storage. Check engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, and any other fluids specified for the machine. Follow the service intervals and use products that meet the manufacturer’s requirements.

Inspect air, fuel, oil, and hydraulic filters and replace them when needed. A restricted air filter can affect engine performance, while a dirty fuel filter may cause poor operation. Keeping filters clean also helps protect the systems they serve.

Lubrication deserves regular attention as well. Grease bearings, pivot points, joints, and other fittings listed in the owner’s manual. Check chains for proper tension and apply the recommended lubricants. Avoid using the same product everywhere simply because it is convenient; different components may require different types of grease or lubricant.

Look for signs of excessive wear while servicing these areas. A dry bearing, loose chain, or damaged fitting can often be corrected quickly when found early. Left unattended, the same issue can result in a broken component during a busy day in the field.

Inspect Hydraulics, Belts, Hoses, and Electrical Systems

Hydraulic systems handle many of the functions needed during planting, so they should be inspected before work begins. Check hoses for cracks, cuts, abrasion, bulges, and leaks. Examine fittings and couplers and make sure cylinders move smoothly. If hydraulic fluid is leaking, find the source and make the repair before operating the machine.

Belts and hoses should be checked for aging and damage. Look for cracking, fraying, soft spots, and loose connections. Replacing a questionable belt or hose in the shop is far easier than replacing one in the middle of a field.

The electrical system needs attention too. Check the battery, terminals, cables, wiring, connectors, fuses, lights, and switches. Clean corrosion from battery connections and make sure the battery is holding a proper charge.

Modern planting operations also depend on electronic systems. Check displays, GPS guidance, sensors, monitors, and implement controls before the first field pass. Verify guidance lines, field boundaries, planting settings, prescription files, and other data you expect to use. Software and firmware should be updated when required, and calibration should be completed before planting.

Calibrate Before You Enter the Field

A machine can be mechanically sound and still produce poor results if its settings are wrong. Take time to calibrate planting systems before starting full-scale fieldwork.

For a planter, check seed population, row spacing, seed depth, singulation, downforce, and closing performance. Settings may need to change depending on the crop, soil type, residue, moisture, and field conditions. Do not assume that last year’s settings will work exactly the same this season.

Keep commonly needed replacement parts and basic tools available. Items such as spare chains, belts, fuses, fittings, pins, and other small parts can save valuable time when a minor problem occurs.

A written service record is also useful. Record repairs, fluid changes, replaced components, calibration work, and problems discovered during the previous season. These notes can make next year’s preparation faster and help identify recurring issues.

Safety should remain part of the final inspection. Make sure guards and shields are in place, warning devices are working, and operators understand proper procedures. Always shut down the engine and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before working around moving components.

Planting preparation should begin well before the first suitable field day. Starting early leaves enough time to order parts, schedule professional repairs, and test machinery without rushing. It also reduces the chance of discovering several problems at once when the planting window has already opened.
